VAT

VAT is complicated. We make it simple.

VAT has more quirks than any other UK tax. Different rates on different goods, partial exemption rules, flat rate vs standard rate, the reverse charge for construction, the margin scheme for second-hand goods — and for every one of those, there's an edge case that catches people out.

If you're VAT-registered, we'll handle every return. If you're approaching the £90k threshold, we'll tell you when and how to register. If HMRC investigates, we'll deal with them for you. All part of your fixed monthly fee.

Sound familiar?

Most businesses don't have an accountant.
They have a filing service.

If any of these ring true, you're not getting what you should be.

01
You only hear from them at year-end
No check-ins, no planning, no conversation. Just a bill and a set of accounts you don't fully understand.
02
You're never sure where you stand
Your numbers are months out of date. You're making decisions based on gut feel, not real figures.
03
Surprise invoices keep landing
An email here, a phone call there — and suddenly your bill is twice what you expected. No one told you.

Common questions

Things people ask us.

When do I have to register for VAT?

When your VAT-taxable turnover exceeds £90,000 in any rolling 12-month period (or you expect it to in the next 30 days). Voluntary registration below that is sometimes a good idea if you sell mostly to other VAT-registered businesses.

Should I be on the Flat Rate Scheme?

The FRS simplifies your VAT by letting you pay a fixed percentage of your gross turnover instead of tracking input VAT on purchases. It works for some service businesses with low expenses. It's usually a bad fit for retail, hospitality or anything with high input costs. We'll run the numbers for you.

What is the VAT reverse charge?

For construction services between VAT-registered B2B entities, the customer accounts for the VAT instead of the supplier. It sounds complex. We handle the coding in Xero so you don't have to think about it.
