Sole trader accounting

The easiest way to stay on top of it.

When you're running a business on your own, the last thing you need is an accountant who only calls once a year to send a bill. Sole traders come to us because they want their tax return done properly, their expenses tracked correctly, and someone who flags issues before HMRC does.

We work with sole traders across the East Midlands — consultants, tradespeople, creatives, therapists, drivers and everyone in between. The setup is the same for all of them: one fixed monthly fee, everything included, no nasty surprises.

What's included

Everything a sole trader needs.

Everything is included in your fixed monthly fee. No extras, no surprises.

Self assessment tax return
Prepared and filed every January. We work backwards from the deadline so you never miss it.
Bookkeeping support
Xero or your preferred tool, set up correctly. We show you how to use it in under an hour.
Expenses & allowances
We make sure you claim everything you can — home office, mileage, tools, subsistence, training.
Making Tax Digital (MTD ITSA)
From April 2026, most sole traders must submit quarterly returns. We handle it.
Tax planning
Proper advice on whether and when to incorporate, what you can legitimately claim, and how to structure your year.
HMRC correspondence
Any letter, any query. We deal with HMRC on your behalf, no extra cost.

Sound familiar?

Most businesses don't have an accountant.
They have a filing service.

If any of these ring true, you're not getting what you should be.

01
You only hear from them at year-end
No check-ins, no planning, no conversation. Just a bill and a set of accounts you don't fully understand.
02
You're never sure where you stand
Your numbers are months out of date. You're making decisions based on gut feel, not real figures.
03
Surprise invoices keep landing
An email here, a phone call there — and suddenly your bill is twice what you expected. No one told you.

Common questions

Things people ask us.

How much do sole trader accountancy fees cost?

At Barton, sole trader fees typically start at £45/month. That includes your self assessment, MTD submissions, bookkeeping support and any HMRC correspondence. We'll give you a clear quote after a 15-minute chat.

Do I need to go limited?

It depends on your profit level and personal circumstances. As a rough guide, once you're earning north of £30,000 profit, it's worth a conversation. We'll run the numbers for you without pressure either way.

What about Making Tax Digital?

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment (MTD ITSA) is now live for most sole traders. You need to keep digital records and submit quarterly updates to HMRC. We handle the whole thing as part of your monthly fee.
