Accountants who know Ashby-de-la-Zouch.

Our office is in the centre of Ashby-de-la-Zouch, inside Shellbrook House on South Street. We work with limited companies, sole traders, landlords, contractors and start-ups across Ashby-de-la-Zouch and the wider North West Leicestershire area.

If you're a business owner in Ashby who's tired of an accountant that files your accounts and vanishes, we'd love to have a proper conversation.

What we do for Ashby-de-la-Zouch businesses

Whether you're a limited company, sole trader, contractor, landlord or start-up, we provide the same fixed-fee, proactive service. Here's what's included with every client:

  • Annual accounts and tax returns — filed on time, every time, with a pre year-end review to minimise your bill
  • Bookkeeping and Xero — set up, trained and supported so your numbers are always current
  • VAT returns — quarterly submissions under Making Tax Digital
  • Payroll and CIS — for staff, subcontractors and directors
  • Management accounts — monthly P&L and balance sheet so you always know where you stand
  • Tax planning — proactive, before year-end, not after

Why businesses in Ashby-de-la-Zouch choose us

Three reasons local Ashby business owners come to us:

  1. We're actually here. Walk in any time during working hours. We'll put the kettle on. You'll meet the same team that does your accounts, not a receptionist from a national call centre.
  2. We know North West Leicestershire. We know the local landlords, the trades businesses, the high street cafés and the remote consultancies that make up Ashby's economy. We understand what you're up against.
  3. Fixed fees, always. You pay one monthly fee. It covers everything. If you call us five times in a week, you still pay the same. That's the point.

Other areas we serve across North West Leicestershire

We work with businesses right across the East Midlands, not just Ashby-de-la-Zouch. Our Ashby office sits in the centre of a wide local catchment, and we have clients based in:

  • Coalville, Whitwick, Thringstone and Swannington
  • Measham, Moira and Donisthorpe
  • Ibstock, Heather, Ravenstone and Ellistown
  • Packington, Smisby, Snarestone and Ashby Woulds
  • Bagworth, Markfield and Newtown Linford
  • Swadlincote, Woodville and Church Gresley
  • Burton upon Trent
  • Hinckley, Earl Shilton and Barwell
  • Loughborough, Shepshed and Quorn

Most of our day-to-day work is delivered online via Xero, secure document sharing and video call — so whether your business sits in the town centre or out in one of the villages, you get the same fixed-fee, proactive service from the same two directors.

Serving Ashby-de-la-Zouch and beyond.

Industries we serve

Local knowledge. Local experience.

Ashby-de-la-Zouch and the wider North West Leicestershire economy is a real mix — commuters working remote jobs for Leicester, Nottingham and Birmingham; independent shops and cafes along Market Street; construction trades on the local housing developments; and the professional services and consultancies that have made Ashby home. Over the years we've picked up deep experience in the sectors that actually operate in and around Ashby — which means when you sit down with us, we're not learning your industry on your time.

Professional services and consultants

Ashby has a growing community of solicitors, IT consultants, marketers, coaches, architects and designers — often running limited companies, sometimes with directors' loans and dividend questions. We handle the lot: accounts, corporation tax, tax-efficient director pay, and the honest answer to "can I put this through the business?" that many consultants stop asking their old accountant. Most of our work with consultants is remote-friendly over Xero, so whether you're office-based or working from a cottage outside Measham, nothing changes.

Construction and trades (CIS)

Ashby-de-la-Zouch and the surrounding area has a busy construction scene — builders, groundworkers, plumbers, electricians and roofers working across North West Leicestershire and into Derbyshire. We handle CIS returns, subcontractor verification, VAT domestic reverse charge, and the annual accounts that keep HMRC off your back. If you're a sole trader carpenter or a limited company main contractor, we know the rules that apply and the common mistakes that cost people money.

Hospitality and leisure

Cafes, pubs, tearooms and small restaurants around Ashby have unusual cashflow and VAT rules that catch people out. A summer pays for a winter, a weekend takes more than a weekday, and the rules on food VAT are a minefield. We help hospitality operators in Ashby, Measham and the surrounding villages understand their weekly numbers, plan for seasonal dips, and stay on top of PAYE for casual staff and the occasional tronc for tips.

Independent retail

Running an independent shop on Market Street or Bath Street means tight margins, stock to manage and increasingly competitive online rivals. We set retailers up properly on Xero with stock tracking, help with mixed-rate VAT on combined product ranges, and make sure you're not overpaying tax on promotional discounts or markdowns. For owner-managers thinking about an online arm, we handle the crossover between a physical shop and a Shopify or Etsy presence.

Landlords and property

Whether you have a single buy-to-let in Measham or a portfolio of rentals across North West Leicestershire, the rules keep shifting — Section 24 restrictions on mortgage interest, Making Tax Digital for Income Tax for landlords above the threshold, and ongoing changes to furnished holiday lets. We look after individual landlords and property companies, and we'll tell you honestly which structure makes sense for your situation rather than defaulting to whichever pays us more.

Contractors and IR35

Ashby sits in the commuter belt for Leicester, Derby and Nottingham, and plenty of our clients are contractors running limited companies or thinking about moving away from umbrella. IR35 is the question that follows contractors around, and we help you understand your status, structure your take-home tax-efficiently, and stay compliant without drowning in paperwork. If you're weighing up contract versus permanent, we're happy to talk through the numbers honestly before you decide.

Rural and agricultural businesses

North West Leicestershire has a strong rural economy outside Ashby proper — smallholdings, equestrian businesses, farm diversifications, and agricultural contractors. Farming accounts have their own quirks, from averaging of profits to grant schemes and capital allowances on machinery. We're happy to pick up rural clients and make sense of the specific tax rules that apply.

Start-ups and new businesses

Starting a business in Ashby, Coalville or anywhere in the region? The first 12 months are when the biggest tax decisions get made — sole trader versus limited company, VAT registration timing, how to pay yourself, what records to keep. We run a proper start-up service (company formation is free when you sign up as a monthly client) and give you the foundations to grow without expensive mistakes in year two. See our start-up accountancy services for the full breakdown.

Visit us

Come and see us in Ashby-de-la-Zouch.

If you'd rather have a proper conversation face-to-face, you're welcome at the office any time during working hours. We think choosing an accountant is a decision worth making in person — not over a web form. Pop in for a coffee, bring your current accounts, or just have a chat about whether we'd be the right fit.

Where to find us

Our Ashby office is at Shellbrook House, South Street, Ashby-de-la-Zouch, LE65 1BR. It's in the centre of town, a two-minute walk from Market Street and the traditional shopping area around Bath Street. If you're walking from Ashby Castle, we're about four minutes away heading south. The building sits on a quiet part of South Street, so it's easy to spot once you're on the road.

Getting here

Ashby-de-la-Zouch is very well connected for the East Midlands. The A42 runs right past the town linking the M42 and M1, and the A511 connects us to Burton upon Trent and Leicester. From Coalville, Swadlincote, Measham, Moira or Donisthorpe, we're a ten-to-fifteen minute drive. From Leicester or Burton, we're twenty to twenty-five minutes. East Midlands Airport is less than fifteen minutes away, which matters for our clients with international customers or suppliers.

If you're coming by bus, the main Ashby bus station sits on North Street, a short walk from our office. There isn't a mainline railway station in Ashby itself — the nearest options are Burton upon Trent or Leicester, both well served.

Parking

Parking in Ashby town centre is generally straightforward. There's on-street parking along South Street and surrounding roads, and the main town-centre car parks on Nottingham Road and North Street are a short walk away. If you're driving specifically to see us, the South Street on-street spaces are usually the easiest option.

What to expect when you visit

You won't be met by a front-of-house call centre — you'll be met by the person who's actually going to do your accounts. We'll put the kettle on, take you through how we work, look at where you are now and where you want to be, and give you a clear honest view on whether we're the right firm for your business. No pressure, no sales script. If we're not the right fit, we'll tell you and usually point you in a sensible direction.

If you'd rather not come in

You don't need to visit us to work with us. Most of our day-to-day work happens over Xero, email, phone and video call, and plenty of our Ashby clients have never actually set foot in the office. If you'd rather do the whole thing remotely, that's genuinely fine — we set up fully remote clients every month and they get exactly the same service as the people who walk in.

Working hours

We're open Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 17:30. Outside those hours we're usually reachable by email, and we answer reasonably quickly. If you need to speak to us outside working hours for something urgent, let us know — we'll make it work.

Our office is in the centre of Ashby-de-la-Zouch, inside Shellbrook House on South Street (LE65 1BR). It's a two-minute walk from Market Street and easy to reach from the A42 and A511. You can walk in during working hours — Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 17:30. We'll put the kettle on.

Are you ICAEW chartered accountants?

Yes. Barton Accountancy Limited is an ICAEW Chartered Accountancy firm regulated by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. When you look for chartered accountants in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, ICAEW membership is the standard worth checking — it means full qualification, continuous training and professional recourse if anything goes wrong.

How much does an accountant in Ashby-de-la-Zouch cost?

It depends on your business — sole trader, limited company, turnover and what's included. Every Ashby client pays a fixed monthly fee agreed upfront with no surprise invoices, and we quote in writing after a short conversation. See our guide to what determines the cost of an accountant, or get a free fixed quote in two minutes.

What types of Ashby businesses do you work with?

We work with limited companies, sole traders, partnerships, landlords, contractors and start-ups across Ashby-de-la-Zouch and North West Leicestershire. Our clients include local trades, professional services, hospitality, construction and ecommerce businesses — from one-person consultancies to growing teams with 20+ staff.

Do you only work with businesses in Ashby-de-la-Zouch?

No. Our office is in Ashby but we work with clients across North West Leicestershire — Coalville, Measham, Moira, Donisthorpe, Whitwick, Thringstone, Swannington and Ibstock — and further afield. Most of what we do is online (Xero, email, video calls) so you don't need to live in Ashby to work with us.

I'm looking for an accountant near me — can I just drop in?

Absolutely. The office is on South Street in Ashby, right in the town centre. You don't need an appointment to pop in and say hello during working hours. If you'd rather, call us first on 01530 886296 and we'll make sure someone's around to chat properly.

How do I switch to Barton from my current accountant in Ashby?

Easy. You tell us the name of your current accountant, we handle the rest — writing to them for your records, updating HMRC as your new agent, and walking you through the handover. Most Ashby clients are fully switched in about two weeks with no disruption. See how switching works for the full step-by-step.

Can you help me start a limited company in Ashby-de-la-Zouch?

Yes. We handle the full company formation — Companies House registration, HMRC setup, business banking advice and Xero setup. Company formation is free when you sign up as a monthly client. See our start-up accountancy services for more.

Sound familiar?

Most businesses don't have an accountant.
They have a filing service.

If any of these ring true, you're not getting what you should be.

01
You only hear from them at year-end
No check-ins, no planning, no conversation. Just a bill and a set of accounts you don't fully understand.
02
You're never sure where you stand
Your numbers are months out of date. You're making decisions based on gut feel, not real figures.
03
Surprise invoices keep landing
An email here, a phone call there — and suddenly your bill is twice what you expected. No one told you.
