Barton Accountancy — working in the Ashby office
About us

Accountants who stay in touch.

A two-director ICAEW Chartered Accountancy firm based mainly in Ashby-de-la-Zouch with a Swadlincote presence. Small enough that you'll always speak to someone who knows your business; chartered so you have a properly credentialed accountant on every file.

Our story

Why we started Barton.

We started Barton Accountancy because we kept hearing the same complaints from business owners. Their accountant never called. Their numbers were always out of date. They got hit with invoices they didn't expect. And when they tried to ask a question, they got charged for the privilege.

That's not accounting. That's admin with a quarterly bill.

We set out to do it differently. Fixed monthly fees so you always know what you're paying. Regular check-ins so your numbers are never a surprise. Xero set up properly so you can see where you stand in real time. And a phone that actually gets answered when you ring it.

We're not the cheapest. We're not trying to be. We're trying to be the people you'd actually call if something was wrong — not the firm you avoid because you're worried what it'll cost.

The chartered accountant behind Barton

Lisa Shorthouse,
ICAEW Chartered Accountant.

Lisa Shorthouse, ICAEW Chartered Accountant at Barton Accountancy in Ashby-de-la-Zouch
ICAEW Chartered Accountant — Barton Accountancy Chartered

Lisa is the ICAEW Chartered Accountant at Barton. The credential matters — under UK regulation, only firms with a chartered or certified accountant can sign off statutory accounts and represent clients to HMRC. The chartered designation requires a degree-level professional qualification, several years of supervised practice, and ongoing continuing professional development to maintain.

Lisa trained in practice and has spent her career working with owner-managed limited companies, sole traders, contractors and construction businesses across the East Midlands. She's the person who reviews every set of accounts, every corporation tax return and every tricky HMRC letter that comes through the door at Barton.

Day to day, Lisa runs technical work and senior client conversations. Scott — the firm's other director — runs operations, payroll, bookkeeping and the day-to-day client management. Between them they run a deliberately small, two-director firm so every client speaks to someone who actually knows their business.

Are we right for you?

We're not the right fit for everyone.
And that's OK.

Here's an honest breakdown of who we work brilliantly with — and who we probably don't.

We're a great fit if…

  • You're a small to medium East Midlands business who wants to actually understand your numbers
  • You want fixed monthly fees and a proper conversation, not hourly billing and chase-ups
  • You'd rather work with a small team that knows your name than a giant agency
  • You use Xero or you're open to moving to it with our help
  • You like the idea of an accountant who'll flag problems before they become problems

We're probably not a fit if…

  • You're shopping on price alone and just want the cheapest possible service
  • You're a very large business that needs a full in-house finance team
  • You want bookkeeping done on paper or a legacy desktop system
  • You want an accountant who files once a year and stays out of your business the rest of the time
  • You're looking for aggressive tax schemes rather than straightforward, compliant planning

If the left column sounds like you, we should probably talk.

The right fit

You'll fit right in if…

Our best clients all share a few things in common. They run their own businesses. They take them seriously. And they want a proper accountant, not a tick-box filing service.

  • You prefer a quick phone call over a formal email thread
  • You like knowing where you stand financially, not guessing
  • You believe paying for expertise is cheaper than learning the hard way
  • You'd rather plan for tax in October than discover it in January
  • You appreciate someone who gives you a straight answer, even if it's not what you want to hear

If any of that sounds like you, you'll feel right at home with us.

What to expect

The first 30 days.
Plainly, this is what happens.

No mystery, no back-and-forth, no awkward onboarding forms. Here's exactly how switching to Barton actually works.

01
Day 1 — A proper chat
15 minutes on the phone or in the office. We talk about your business, what you need and what's frustrating you about your current setup. No script, no sales pitch.
02
Day 2 — Clear fixed quote
Within one working day of our chat, you get a one-page quote. Your fixed monthly fee. What's included. Zero small print, zero surprises later.
03
Week 2 — We handle the handover
You sign a quick authorisation letter. We do the rest — writing to your old accountant, requesting records, sorting HMRC agent authorities. No awkward phone calls for you.
04
Week 3 — Xero is ready
Your data migrated, bank feeds connected, chart of accounts cleaned up. We run you through the basics in an hour. By week 4 you're fully settled.

What we stand for

Four things we care about.

These aren't marketing slogans. They're the reasons our clients stay with us.

Building lasting relationships
Lasting relationships
We're not interested in one-off engagements. The best work happens when we understand your business inside out, and that only comes with time. Most of our clients have been with us for years.
Clear communication
Clear communication
No jargon. No vague emails. If we need something from you, we ask in plain English. If you need something from us, we reply the same day.
Passion for accountancy
Passion for the work
We genuinely enjoy accounting. Finding a tax saving, spotting a cash flow problem before it bites, helping a start-up get its first set of accounts right — this is the part we look forward to.
Attention to detail
Attention to detail
Small mistakes cost real money in accounting. We're meticulous because we have to be. Every number gets checked. Every deadline gets tracked. Every filing gets double-read before it goes to HMRC.
